UPS buys stake in TuSimple after using its autonomous trucks
UPS (United Parcel Service Inc.) | Auto Blog
DETROIT — UPS said on Thursday it has bought a minority stake in self-driving company TuSimple, and the world's largest package delivery company has been testing the startup's autonomous trucks since May on a busy freight route in Arizona. It could take years to test and develop self-driving vehicles and for the government to build out a regulatory framework. The trucks run around the clock, with the self-driving trucks delivering freight within UPS' system. Experts says self-driving trucks are an easier proposition than robotaxis. Self-driving trucks run consistently on predictable highway routes - in UPS' case carrying large numbers of revenue-generating packages or goods - around the clock, including in the early hours of the morning when driving conditions are ideal.

Spotify's Unique Podcaster Tools Are a Big Competitive Advantage
SPOT (Spotify Technology S.A.) | The Motley Fool
Spotify (NYSE:SPOT) opened its Spotify for Podcasters dashboard to everyone earlier this week, providing podcasters with access to loads of data and analytics. That kind of data isn't available on any other platform, including Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) Podcast app, which still accounts for the majority of podcast listening. For now, Spotify for Podcasters offers creators the tools necessary to sell ads more effectively and create more content their audiences will love. Growing both sides of the equationSpotify says podcast listening increased 50% sequentially in the second quarter, and it's nearly doubled since the start of the year. The distant, but inevitable future of autonomous vehicles
F (Ford Motor Company) | Quartz
We were promised self-driving cars, but what we got were delays. In 2016, Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised drivers a car that could drive “hands-free” from New York to Los Angeles within a year. That same year, Carlos Ghosn, the former executive leading Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors, promised self-driving cars by the end of the decade. Lyft co-founder John Zimmer predicted most Lyft rides would be AVs as early as 2021 and private car ownership would be phased out of major US cities. Legacy automakers are racing to transform themselves from metal benders to suppliers of mobility “services” as the world begins to shift away from personal car ownership.

Huawei to get 90-day extension, company’s fate remains in limbo
002502 (Huawei Technology Company Ltd) | Slash Gear
Huawei was initially granted a 90-day exception to purchase some, but not all, American products it needs to maintain its business, including Google’s Android software, but that time will end August 19. Sources, however, claim that Huawei will be granted another temporary general license for yet another 90 days. US President Trump has practically admitted to using Huawei as a bargaining chip in the US’ trade war with China. On the mobile side alone, it has yet to present either a suitable Android fork or a convincing Android replacement. Either way, it will still be a very rocky 90 days if the extension ever gets granted on Monday.

Target Earnings: What to Watch
TGT (Target Corporation) | The Motley Fool
Target isn't alone in posting strong sales these days, with Walmart seeking record gains, too. Sales gains landed at 4.8% in the fiscal first quarter, compared with Walmart's 3.4% uptick. That metric jumped 4.3% last quarter, meaning it accounted for almost all of the retailer's sales gains. Still, there are major risks that threaten its earnings power, including aggressive competitive responses to its market share gains and rising prices from the U.S. trade war with China. But a solid second quarter would put Target in an ideal position to capitalize on broader industry strength and its own successful growth initiatives.

Cathay Pacific shares in choppy trade after shock exit of CEO Hogg
Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd | Financial Post
HONG KONG/SINGAPORE — Cathay Pacific shares were choppy in opening trade on Monday after the shock exit of CEO Rupert Hogg, as the airline grapples with mounting Chinese scrutiny over the involvement of some of its staff in anti-government protests in Hong Kong. Tang’s priority should be rebuilding the brand and restoring customer confidence in all markets, including Hong Kong, the mainland and overseas after the Chinese regulatory action and recent disruptions at Hong Kong airport, CAPA Centre for Aviation Chief Analyst Brendan Sobie said. “The carrier will likely see weaker demand if travelers boycott Cathay over the short term,” he said. Endau’s Yusof said in the longer term, 30% shareholder Air China could buy the remainder of Cathay, but there was no urgency because the Hong Kong carrier was in a state of flux. “That will only occur when the political climate is right.”
