Uber’s Proposed $21 An Hour California Driver Minimum Wage Is Less Than New York City’s
UBER (Uber Technologies Inc) | Forbes
Rideshare drivers wave flags and hold signs during a protest outside of Uber headquarters in San Francisco, California. The $21 per hour minimum wage includes driver expenses, which is still less than New York City’s legally mandated ride-hailing driver minimum wage of $26.51 including expenses. While activists have been calling on ride-hailing companies to allow drivers to unionize, Uber’s proposal doesn’t specifically say that drivers can form unions. Three 2020 Democratic candidates have endorsed AB 5: Senator Kamala Harris, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders. According to the Economic Policy Institute, Uber drivers make on average $9.21 per hour.

Microsoft is rethinking Windows 10's tablet interface for 2-in-1s
MSFT (Microsoft Corporation) | Tech Radar
For those of us using 2-in-1s that run the Windows 10 operating system, such as the popular Surface range, Microsoft is looking to improve the overall experience in the coming months. The latest version of the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build (18970) has included a change to how the user interface is displayed when using a 2-in-1 in tablet mode – when you fold back the keyboard or remove it entirely. (Image credit: Microsoft)Specifically, the interface will retain more of its desktop-like aesthetics when switching to tablet mode – instead of displaying a full-screen start menu packed with tiles and hiding the taskbar icons, the desktop will remain visible and some other tablet-friendly tweaks will occur. When these changes roll out publicly, you will no longer be prompted to enter tablet mode when your device deems it necessary, although the mode will still exist as an option for the time being. At the moment, the change is only available to people using 2-in-1 devices on the Windows Insider program (Windows tablets retain the old interface), and only a select few have access while Microsoft assesses the quality of the changes.

LYFT (Lyft Inc) | Axios
Uber, Lyft and DoorDash are prepared to spend a collective $90 million on a ballot measure, vowing on Thursday to fight a California bill that would force their workers in the state to be treated as employees, rather than independent contractors, the AP reports. What's happening: The companies are offering $30 million each to counter the state bill with a yet-to-be drafted ballot initiative that would give drivers health benefits, collective bargaining rights and earnings guarantees. Per the New York Times, the tech firms argue that "changing the legal status of their drivers poses a fundamental threat to their businesses."

Waymo urges NHTSA to 'promptly' remove requirement for steering wheel, pedals
GOOG (Alphabet Inc) | Autoblog
WASHINGTON — Waymo, the self-driving car unit of Google parent Alphabet Inc, on Thursday urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to "promptly" remove regulatory barriers for cars without steering wheels and brake pedals. NHTSA should first work on addressing those safety standards that assume a human is behind the wheel before revising rules to address alternative seating configurations, Waymo said. That involves revising crashworthiness standards to address occupants faced to the rear or side in fully self-driving cars. New seating positions "are not vital to the development or deployment of AVs," Waymo said, referring to autonomous vehicles. NHTSA is also grappling with how and where to test self-driving cars to assure they are safe.

Apple's Tariff Impact Drastically Overstated
AAPL (Apple Inc.) | Seeking Alpha
The key to the story is that Apple is a global company that sells products far outside the U.S. market. Not to mention, Services account for over 20% of total sales and won't be part of any tariff placing total U.S. A 10% tariff only hits Apple by $1.9 billion and a 15% tariff is $2.8 billion. My $14.00 EPS target for FY20 is maintained due to limited actual tariff impact and the likelihood that the tariff is maintained for the full year as small. A 10% tariff would have the minimal impact of reducing the target ~$0.25 to $13.75.

How an AI archive platform is helping a Victorian library keep up with data
Civica | ZDNet
Victoria's Stonnington Libraries together with Civica have developed an artificial intelligence-based proof-of-concept solution to remove the manual work involved with cataloguing and searching through library archive databases. Prior to building this platform for the last 20 years, the library had been manually cataloguing its archive database. "With Civica's new approach to automate that initial task, these resources can now be accessible much faster and without the burden on already time-pressed library personnel." The challenge is to make this rich data set available for further use," Civica ANZ managing director of Libraries and Education Simon Jones. "However, libraries are already busy places – they don't have the time or staff resources to manually catalogue, index and manage all of these data resources.
