Google Cloud's Andrew Moore says AI must be more accessible to succeed
GOOG (Alphabet Inc.) | VentureBeat
While Google Cloud AI head Andrew Moore faces a vast array of challenges in his new gig, one of his biggest priorities remains making the power of artificial intelligence accessible to as many people as possible. Moore previously worked with Google from 2006 to 2014 and last year rejoined the company as its Google Cloud AI head. By the same measure, if it becomes easier to see the impact of AI on real-world problems, that creates a new motivation for data scientists. “If you find yourself in an organization where they are saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to introduce AI because our competitors are using AI,’ there is a danger they will be using AI without connecting it to a business model,” he said. “I would just walk away from a project that doesn’t know why it’s using AI.”

U.S. launches probe of French plans to tax tech giants, a potential step to retaliation and a new transatlantic trade rift
AMZN (Amazon.com Inc.) | The Washington Post
French president Emmanuel Macron has voiced support for new taxes on large tech companies. A number of other countries are considering similar levies, on the belief that wealthy U.S. tech giants aren’t paying enough tax worldwide. The French levy would impose a 3 percent tax on certain revenue that large tech companies earn inside France. Legislators call it a tax on Les GAFA — the acronym for Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple — companies that France has accused of paying insufficient income tax. If the French tax comes into force, it could be the first of many.

McAfee Could Make Good For Intel, Private Equity Owners In New IPO
McAfee, LLC | Forbes
The report comes on the heels of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike’s successful IPO last month. Intel, known for manufacturing semiconductors, bought the anti-virus maker for $7.6 billion in cash in 2011. Five years later it sold a majority stake to TPG for $1.1 billion, in a cut-price deal that gave an enterprise value of just $4.2 billion to McAfee. The following year private equity firm Thoma Bravo bought a minority stake in the company. The boost in cash flow could mean that Intel, which still owns 49% of McAfee, will eventually make money from its deal.

Apple Might Scoop Up Thousands of Intel Patents in Pursuit of 5G Modem
AAPL (Apple Inc.) | The Motley Fool
Last month, Intel kicked off an auction for all those patents, and Apple has emerged as a probable buyer as part of its ongoing effort to develop an in-house 5G modem. If talks with that unnamed bidder fall through, the auction could potentially reopen to other parties. The mobile portfolio that Intel is looking to sell comprises approximately 8,500 patents related to wireless technologies including 3G, 4G, and 5G, as well as related implementation methods. Apple had little choice but to mend its relationship with Qualcomm in order to launch a 5G iPhone, which is expected to happen next year. Apple buying up all that IP would be the best outcome for everyone involved, allowing Intel to unload the patents expeditiously while accelerating Apple's 5G road map.
