As YouTube Tries To Fight Controversial Content, It’s Giving Quality Creators With New Ways To Make Money
GOOG (Alphabet Inc.) | Forbes
YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan delivered YouTube's keynote at the VidCon conference in Anaheim, Calif. in 2018. “We’re really focusing on rewarding the creators that are generating value,” Mohan told Forbes in an interview before the keynote. Mohan’s message on stage on Thursday was that giving top creators ways to increase their revenue would encourage more quality posts as the site continues to fight controversial content. YouTube takes a cut of both the advertising and non-advertising revenue it pays creators so the boom in user spending is a boon for Google, too. (Despite investor entreaty, neither Google nor parent-company Alphabet have revealed YouTube’s revenue figures.)

Facebook VP: AI has a compute dependency problem
FB (Facebook Inc) | VentureBeat
In one of his first public speaking appearances since joining Facebook to lead its AI initiatives, VP Jérôme Pesenti expressed his concern about the growing use of compute power necessary to create powerful AI systems. Examples of systems less reliant on compute for innovative breakthroughs include Pluribus, an AI system developed by Facebook AI Research and Carnegie Mellon University, introduced today, that can take on world-class poker players. The end of Moore’s Law means the compute necessary to create the most advanced AI is going up. He believes bias typically comes from data sets rather than the creators of AI systems. Analysis by Data & Society fellow and Algorithmic Accountability Act coauthor Mutale Nkonde found that Facebook AI Research currently employs 146 people, none of whom are of African descent.

Nike keeps plans for Arizona factory despite controversy
NKE (Nike Inc) | Houston Chronicle
PHOENIX (AP) — Nike announced Thursday it's going forward with plans to make soles for Nike Air shoes in a Phoenix suburb even though Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey blocked state money for the facility when the company pulled a flag-themed shoe from the market. The shoemaker did not address the controversy in announcing its plans for a $184 million factory with at least 500 jobs in Goodyear. Despite his earlier criticism, Ducey welcomed Nike to Arizona on Thursday. "Arizona's economy is doing just fine without Nike," Ducey wrote on Twitter.

Intel: New chip materials will enable massive AI research gains
INTC (Intel Corporation ) | VentureBeat
Intel VP and CTO of AI products Amir Khosrowshahi and general manager of IoT Jonathan Ballon shared their thoughts onstage at VentureBeat’s 2019 Transform conference in San Francisco. It’s undoubtedly true that the barriers to AI adoption are much lower than they once were, according to Khosrowshahi. Despite the embarrassment of development riches, however, Khosrowshahi says that identifying the right tools remain a blocker for some projects. “Processor cooling infrastructure, software frameworks, and so forth have really enabled [these AI models], and it’s kind of an enormous amount of compute,” said Khosrowshahi. Khosrowshahi is bullish on new types of transistors that rely on multiferroics and topological materials to run machine learning algorithms.

US tech companies face new French tax – four experts weigh in
AMZN (Amazon.com Inc.) | CNBC
U.S. tech companies are facing more scrutiny from Europe. France's Senate on Thursday approved a tax on revenues from major tech companies, including Google, Amazon and Facebook, raising the ire of the White House. Stephanie Link of Nuveen sees value in one corner of the tech market. "I understand why you want to own some software, software as a service, but they do trade at 30 to 50 times forward earnings. The better value would be in the semiconductor space and even the FANG because they have been dragged down on regulation."
