Apple's Fancy Photo Relighting Option Could Soon Be a Feature On Even the Cheapest Smartphones
AAPL (Apple Inc.) | Gizmodo
The iPhone’s Portrait Mode is a good example, letting you tweak the lighting of a photo after you snap it, but it’s a feature limited to Apple’s high-end handsets. Researchers from Google and the University of California, San Diego have found a way to recreate this feature, with even better results, on even the most basic camera-equipped phones. But it also allows iOS’ Portrait Lighting to distinguish features on a person’s face so that lighting adjustments, which are completely faked, look as natural and genuine as possible. For comparison, Apple’s Portrait Lighting feature will only offer six different relighting options when iOS 13 arrives in the Fall. Not exactly real-time, and the research team doesn’t detail what kind of processor was used to achieve their results.

Apple is close to buying Intel's phonechip business, report says
INTC (Intel Corporation) | CNET
Apple is getting closer to buying Intel's smartphone modem business, with the iPhone maker now in "advanced talks" with Intel, The Wall Street Journal has reported. It follows a report last month that Apple is looking to acquire Intel's German smartphone modem business, too. When Apple and Qualcomm settled their legal battle and reached a multiyear 5G chip deal in April this year, Intel exited the 5G phone modem business. Intel told CNET in June it has seen "significant interest" in its 5G modem business, but did not confirm which companies have been in contact. Netflix’s Original Content Strategy Is Failing
NFLX (Netflix Inc.) | Equities

These disappointing subscriber numbers show that Netflix’s investment in original content has failed to deliver the sustainable competitive advantage required to justify its valuation. As Figure 1 shows, Netflix’s revenues are not growing fast enough to cover its rising expenses. Still Reliant on Licensed Content – Which It Is LosingEver since Netflix launched its first original series with House of Cards in 2013, the streaming service has put its original content front and center. Ford to upgrade Chicago plant for SUVs, hire 450 workers
F (Ford Motor Company) | Financial Post
Ford Motor Co said on Monday it would invest $50 million upgrading a Chicago facility to partially assemble hybrid electric SUVs and vehicles for police use, creating 450 jobs. The plant currently modifies vehicles for police use. On Friday, Ford said it would lay off about 200 workers in September at a Canadian manufacturing plant in Oakville, Ontario, with more layoffs possible in January, because of slowing sales of the sedans that the plant manufactures. Overall, U.S. new vehicle sales are expected to fall this year, although pickup trucks and SUVs remain more popular than traditional passenger cars. Last week, Ford also kicked off talks on a new four-year contract with the United Auto Workers union, with job security, healthcare costs and the use of temporary workers expected to be major sticking points.
